NASSCO News 2470 Longstone Lane, Suite M, Marriottsville, MD 21104 | Phone: 410.442.PIPE (7473) | Email: SHEILA'S CORNER NASSCO BECOMES NATIONAL SPONSOR OF SKILLSUSA NASSCO serves a very unique purpose in supporting contractors in the sewer service in- dustry. Through our mission to set standards for the assessment, maintenance and rehabilitation of un- derground infrastructure, along with our commitment to assure the continued acceptance and growth of trenchless tech- nologies, NASSCO strives to provide contractors with resources and support to help them succeed in the field. After all, when con- tractors are armed with the knowledge, specifications and know- how to get work done right, the system owners, engineers and en- tire communities benefit. But what more can NASSCO do beyond certifying workers in PACP®, developing specifications, building awareness for critical federal funding of wastewater infrastructure and awarding scholarships to deserving individuals? How can we help contractors further succeed in their day-to-day operations? The answer to that question came to me loud and clear one day as I was driving into the NASSCO office. I consider myself lucky to enjoy a commute through the beautiful, bucolic hills of Northern Virginia. One day, surrounded by farms and sunrise, I noticed a building in Leesburg, Virginia with a SkillsUSA sign out front. I was curious, so when I got to the office I fired up my computer and Googled "SkillsUSA". Turns out, the organization is exactly what I had been looking for; an established association that can help NASSCO build awareness of the sewer ser vice industr y as an hon- orable, respected and extremely viable employment opportunity. Founded in 1965 and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education, SkillsUSA is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization whose goal is to en- sure America has the skilled workforce it needs to stay competitive. Accomplishing this by pro- viding a vital solution to the growing U.S. skills gap, SkillsUSA partners with students, instruc- tors and industries to achieve that mission. Serving more than 360,000 students and in- structors each year in middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country, the Association's programs integrate career opportunities and education through a framework of personal, workplace and techni- cal skills grounded in academics. With construction as a major industry category, NASSCO has a significant opportunity to introduce the im- pressive technologies available to assess, maintain and rehabilitate un- derground infrastructure in a way that resonates with and attracts young people choosing a career path. I am pleased to report that NASSCO is now a proud, na- tional sponsor of SkillsUSA. Through this relationship, NASSCO will support the construction industry, build awareness for the many opportunities in the sewer service industry, and – most importantly – give young students the confidence and tools they need to make the most impor- tant career decisions of their lives.
