16 T R E N C H L E S S T EC H N O LO GY JA N UA RY 2019 Global design firm Stantec recently announced it has signed an agreement for the sale of its c o n s t r u c t i o n d i v i s i o n , M W H Constructors, to funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, L.P (Oaktree). The sale of MWH Constructors is inclusive of MWH Constructors' U.K. and U.S. divisions and Slayden Constructors Inc. MWH Constructors joined Stantec through the MWH acquisition in 2 0 1 6 . S u b j e c t to c u sto m a r y conditions, the sale was anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2018. The divestiture concludes the strategic review of construction services Stantec announced in April 2018. The strategic review set out to determine an option that would optimize the value of MWH Constructors and provide the best prospects for employees, clients, and shareholders. "MWH Constructors has growth opportunities in the United Kingdom and the United States, and we believe this divestiture will better allow them to invest in and pursue growth while continuing to serve their clients," says Stantec president and CEO Gord Johnston. "We are excited to join Oaktree's construction portfolio focused on p ro j ect d el i ver y," s ays M WH Constructors president and chief of global operations Blair Lavoie. I N T H E N E W S Stantec Signs Agreement to Sell MWH Constructors A cause near and dear to the hearts of the 26th Annual Microtunneling Short Course organizers is helping the men and women who have served in the United States military successfully return to civilian life. To help with this effort, course organizers have teamed up with the Office of Veterans Services at the University of Colorado Boulder to offer a scholarship program for veterans at the annual Microtunneling Short Course. Our Scholarship Program includes a no cost registration to qualifying veterans to attend the Microtunneling Short Course and its networking events. The Adopt a Veteran program helps returning veterans going to the University of Colorado Boulder help themselves by allowing them the opportunity to get their life back on track. The $500 tax-exempt Adopt a Veteran contribution goes to the discretionary fund managed by retired Navy Seal Captain, Stewart Elliott. A Military Veteran Scholarship Presentation describing the program and its value will take place Feb. 7 at the annual ticketed Reception and Banquet Dinner. The 26th annual course returns to the University of Colorado Boulder from Feb. 5-7, 2019, with the one-day Pilot Tube/ GBM Seminar at the Boulder Marriott, the host hotel, on Feb. 4. Through classroom-style learning and networking opportunities, the annual Microtunneling Short Course has been the premier event devoted to advancing the worldwide microtunneling industry. The course will be presented by experts in the industry who will cover technical topics and case histories relating to legal issues, projects, design and construction.
