Highly-active and dynamic NASSCO Committees cover nearly every aspect of under- ground infrastructure topics includ- ing asset management, lateral rehabil - itation, government relations, health and safety, international relations, manhole rehabilitation, pipe rehabili- tation, pressure pipe, PACP software and the RehabZone, an interactive trenchless technology event held each year at the Underground Construction Technology (UCT) Conference. Not only does participation allow NASSCO members in good standing to contribute their time and talents to lend a voice in areas that interest them most, it also greatly benefits our industry as a whole through the development of important resources. NASSCO Committee activity this year has included providing grassroots tools for NASSCO members to easily contact their local government rep- resentatives to encourage funding of underground infrastructure; ongoing studies into the safety of steam emis- sions used in the curing process of CIPP; development of a video on pipe bursting technologies; the release of a specification guideline for cross bore detection and prevention, and so much more. Most recently, after many months of hard work by NASSCO 's Infrastruc- ture Assessment Committee, NASSCO released the 2018 NASSCO Manual of Practice for Trenchless Technologies and Asset Management . Published in partnership with Water Environ- ment Federation (WEF), the Manual of Practice is useful for professionals new to the underground infrastructure industry as well as experienced operators and inspectors. The Manual includes both introductory and advanced topics in asset management, inspection, risk management, flow monitoring , pipe failure prevention, sustainable pipeline systems, bid- ding , specifications, as well as repair, rehabili- tation and replacement methods using trenchless technologies. First published in 1996, NASSCO 's Manual of Practice has been an important industry tool for more than 20 years. During that time signifi- cant industry changes have occurred and are reflected in the recent release. However, while trench- less technologies have advanced, the purpose of the Manual has remained the same: To provide a baseline refer- ence for a broad range of disciplines, and to provide assessment steps and repair options available to municipal staff and engineers, contractors and consultants. The list doesn't end there, though; the Manual is of extreme val - ue to anyone wanting to know more about methods used in the assess- ment, maintenance and repair of un- derground infrastructure. Assembled in an easy- to-read three-chapter format, each section targets important and timely issues to help achieve NASSCO 's mission to set standards for the assessment, maintenance and rehabilitation of underground infrastructure and to assure the continued acceptance and growth of trenchless technologies. NASSCO encourages all members in good standing to join committees and get involved. It is especially important to bring together members who may be competitive in the field to bring their individual perspectives and join forces in the development of objec- tive-based resources the benefit us all. To join NASSCO and get involved in making a difference through Commit- tee participation visit /join . Sheila Joy is executive director of NASSCO.
