In order to evaluate the removal ca- pabilities of the various pieces of me- chanical treating equipment , it is nec- essary to consider the source of the solids and classify them according to the following sizes. Table 1 provides a cross reference to commonly used terminology used within the HDD in- dustry: Often good solids control practices are ignored simply because they are not understood. Typically, an HDD solids control system will employ a combination of shaker, hydrocyclone, mixing , pump, and compartmental - ized tank technologies. Shale Shakers The shale shaker is vital to the sol - ids control system and is considered the "irst line of defense". Shakers act by removing solids from drilling luid as the mud passes over the surface of a vibrating screen . Particles smaller than the openings in the screen pass through the holes of the screen along with the liquid phase of the mud. Par- ticles too large to pass through the screen are thereby separated from the mud for disposal . Without proper screening of the drilling luid dur- ing this initial removal step, down- stream equipment will experience reduced eficiency and effectiveness. The downstream hydrocyclones and/ or centrifuges ( if elected) will simply be overloaded beyond their design capacity. Shale Shaker Screens Basically, a screen acts as a guard of whether a particle is small enough to pass through a screen or not . Screen- ing surfaces used in solids control equipment are generally made of mul - tilayered woven wire screen cloth. The screening surfaces are considered the center of the shaker; therefore, the quality of the shaker is thus deined by the quality of screens it utilizes.
